How much will it cost?
Costs of engineered
chimney systems are extremely economical when compared to masonry
construction. The fact that this can be installed in a day make
engineered chimneys a popular alternative as well. Additionally,
when a masonry chimney fails, the repair costs are extremely high.
IF an engineered chimney component fails, you may simply change the
failed component in a short time and at minimal cost.
Here are some numbers
for you to consider.
Starter Kit
(required)....................$265
High Pitch Flashing (if 7:12 pitch or higher).......$65
Chimney pipe (from ceiling to cap per 4 foot)....$140
So, based on these
figures, the following prices are for COMPLETE kits for various
length chimneys. Package prices take into consideration that the
starter kit includes your first foot of pipe and a standard flashing

Installing a chimney through the ceiling
is economical and relatively easy to do for someone who feels
comfortable cutting a hole in the house. Don't feel comfortable with
that? Call us and schedule a professional installation. HERE IS A
CONDENSED PLAY BY PLAY OF THE INSTALLATION...
1. Begin by placing your appliance
according to its recommended clearances. Plumb from the ceiling to
the center of the appliance vent and mark on the ceiling.
2. Bore a pilot hole at the center
point and into the attic if applicable. It is handy to push a long
probe or clothes hanger for easy locating from above.
3. Go into the attic and locate the
probe. Ensure there are no obstacles within 6 3/8 inches in all
directions from the center point. This is to allow the 12 3/4 inch
square framed opening for our chimney support box later. If an
obstacle is present, center point may require adjustment to allow
for installation.
4. Once the area is determined, cut a
12 3/4 inch square opening and frame with 2X4 studs securely to
joists.
5. Insert ceiling cover mounting tabs
into the framing and secure with 1 1/2 inch screws.
6. From the attic, plumb from the
roof sheeting down through the center of the hole in the ceiling box
and mark center point on the roof.
7. Drill a small hole straight up
through the roof. Be sure to hold your drill plumb so that the drill
bit will penetrate the roof exterior following the plumb line's
path.
8. From the roof, lay the flashing so
that the center point is centered in the flashing's cone. Stand a
long, straight bit plumb to position the flashing with the hole
centered.
9. With the flashing centered, use a
screwdriver or other sharp object to reach inside the cone and mark
the large circle onto the roof surface. This will be your cut line.
Cut just outside that line.
10. Peel back shingles and remove
roofing nails at any location the flashing will be. This is to allow
the flashing to be placed under the shingles for a leak-proof seal.
11. Slide flashing under all shingles
but overlap the bottom course with the flashing. Do not seal or
screw down the flashing at this time.
12. From the attic, install the
starter pipe into the support box and place the attic insulation
shield. Place the insulation shield's collar on your next section of
pipe and place onto the starter section. Place pipe from within the
attic until it extends through the room flashing. Secure attic
insulation shield and collar once plumb. Attic work is now finished!
13. From the roof, extend chimney to
the proper height. Use bracing for taller chimneys. Chimney should
extend to be 2 feet higher than any point 10 feet away and a minimum
of 3 feet above the roof.
14. With chimney installed, use a
magnetic level to plumb chimney. You may now seal under flashing and
nail or screw down. Drive the nails you pulled through their
original holes which you will see in each shingle. Your chimney is
now INSTALLED! Congratulations.
15. The final step is to connect your
stove to the chimney pipe. Be sure to use the proper connector pipe
for your installation. |
